May in Review

Although our classroom at school is quiet and empty, the grade 3’s and 4’s are continuing to build their knowledge and skills at home.  We gather for an hour each day on Google Meet to say hello to each other and do a couple of lessons together.  Then we continue working through our learning tasks for the day, which include some video lessons and workbook assignments.  We can pop into the Google Meet to ask a question or get a little help from Mrs. Span.   On Fridays we have an opportunity to eat lunch together with our friends when we often choose to work on a Jam board together.

We are beginning a Social Studies unit on Canadian Citizenship.  We are blessed to receive this honour just by being born here, while others must work hard to become citizens.  We will discuss the rights and privileges of citizenship and recognize the responsibilities that come with them.  Our discussion on citizenship will not be complete without recognizing that, as great as Canadian citizenship is, it is temporary.  As believers in Christ, we also have been granted heavenly citizenship that will last forever.  This citizenship also comes with many rights and responsibilities. (Philippians 3:20)

May Learning Highlights

The grade 3/4 class is showing flexibility and resilience as we have transitioned back to remote learning due to Covid-19 restrictions.  Mrs. Span is so impressed with her students and their parents as they are continuing to learn and develop their skills at home.  Although the Apostle Paul didn’t experience school in the same way we are today, he still speaks wisdom into our situation.   Here is our paraphrase of his words in Philippians 4:11-13:  “We have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  We know what it is to learn at home with our computer, and we know what it is to learn with our friends at school.  We have learned the secret to doing our best in any and every learning environment, whether in class or over Zoom, whether alone or with my friends.  I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”   Although we are looking forward to getting back to school as normal, we are thankful for the tools and resources we have to help us grow and thrive until then.

March Update

March has been a busy month in grade 3/4.  We have been learning so much in all our subjects but have been especially enjoying science.  In our unit about strong and stable structures we learned that triangles are stable shapes that help keep buildings and bridges strong.   We also found that round paper columns are stronger that square or triangular ones.  In one of our experiments a piece of cardstock rolled into a tube was able to support 100 books!  We have first-hand experience in seeing erosion happen as we watched how melting snow created a stream that carved a mini ravine on its way down the hill in our forest.   In our discussion about how soil is made we decided to speed up the weathering process by crushing rock which is an important component of soil. We have been amazed at how humans, as God’s image-bearers, are able to discover and use laws of science that God created to design, build, and grow amazing things.

How Great is Our God

In Grade 3/4 we are continuing to learn and improve our skills at home.  We meet each morning in Google Meet for a devotional and talk through our assignments for the day.  Then we wave goodbye to our classmates and work our way through our video and workbook lessons.  Sometimes we pop back into the Google Meeting Room for a little help from our teacher.  In our devotion time, we’ve been reading How Great is Our God: 100 Indescribable Devotions About God and Science by Lous Giglio.  We look forward to learning some interesting science facts each morning and using them as an object lesson that points to a spiritual truth.  We especially liked Devotion #43 where we learned about the Himalayan jumping spider who lives 7,000 meters up the Himalayas, the giant kangaroo rat who survives in Death Valley without drinking water, and the Paravinell sulfincola, a worm that lives near underwater vents that reach up to 80 degrees Celsius.  God gave all of these creatures the things they need to survive in their unusual habitats.  God does the same for us.  Even though our school “habitat” is a little unusual right now, God knows our situation and has given us everything we need to serve Him even in our current situation.  Hebrews 13:20 says “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work”.
