Student Support Services at ACCS

Alliston Community Christian School strives to be a true community of belonging.

Emulating Christ, we want to meet the educational needs of all our students with loving compassion and professionalism. Our student support services are an intentional structure designed for our staff to walk with students along their educational journey.

Believing in the growth of the intellect and abilities of students, our staff are equipped to support the process of learning, holding high standards within a nurturing atmosphere.

At some point, everyone needs help.

That’s why Alliston Community Christian School’s student support services are available. We know that children need guides to help them on their learning journey.

About Learning Exceptionalities

Using Christ as our example, we see the needs related to learning exceptionalities as a key part of human diversity and the incredible spectrum through which God reveals himself. We recognize that children are created uniquely and lovingly by God. We aim to meet this diversity of needs through differentiated learning experiences in the classroom as well as through direct support whenever possible.

While holding to the belief that all children can learn and should have the opportunity to learn with loving Christian support, we also must acknowledge that living in a true community is not without its struggles and difficulties. While we desire to meet the needs of each of God’s children, the limitations of our learning spaces and resources may affect the amount of specialized education our school is able to provide. At times, a student’s needs may be better met elsewhere.

Parents are encouraged to inquire about ACCS’ student support services program and work with us in determining if ACCS is the right school to meet your child’s differentiated learning needs. We are always happy to talk with you and to help guide you on this journey.

Types of Student Support at ACCS

Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

An IEP is a written plan describing the specific supports, program and/or services required by a particular student, based on a thorough assessment of the strengths and needs that affect the student’s ability to learn and to demonstrate learning. When it is warranted, our staff engages in a collaborative process, involving parents and others who are closely connected with the student, to develop an IEP. This collaboration continues with periodic reviews of the IEP to make adjustments as needed.

Regular Support

By getting to know each student in their class, our teachers strive to identify the unique learning profile of each student and meet their interests and abilities through differentiated instruction. In certain conditions, a student’s learning profile is best met in the classroom with remediation or enrichment activities.

Indirect Support

Learning support sometimes means that we provide necessary learning accommodations and/or program modifications within the regular classroom. These learning supports can often be met by the classroom teacher, or with the help of an education assistant.

Withdrawal Assistance

Students can also benefit from support outside of the regular classroom. When it is deemed helpful and appropriate, our student support services classroom invites children to receive the help of our Certified Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT), education assistant(s), personal support worker(s), or volunteers.

Accommodations

Accommodations refer to the special teaching and assessment strategies, human supports and/or individualized equipment required by students with exceptionalities to enable them to learn and demonstrate learning. Accommodations do not alter curriculum expectations for the grade level.

Modifications

Modifications are changes made to the grade-level expectations for a subject in order to meet a student’s learning needs. Modifications may involve increasing or decreasing grade-level expectations.
